Homeland Security

In July 2002 the President approved the National Strategy for Homeland Security, a road map for the national effort to prevent and respond to acts of terrorism in the United States. The National Strategy recognizes the vital role of state and local public safety agencies in providing for the security of our homeland. A major component of Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) domestic preparedness initiatives is the ability of First Responders to communicate during a local or national crisis. Enhancing the interoperable communications capabilities of state and local public safety personnel has been the subject of recent DHS funding through grant programs directly to state and local agencies.

Industry organizations have estimated that the nationwide cost of a radio-based replacement solution would exceed $18 Billion for Infrastructure alone, and as much as $40 Billion for new radio products. In addition, the best estimates are that it would require up to ten years to accomplish. While a price tag cannot be put on a Nation's safety, the lack of funding for a cost effective, scalable solution can be detrimental to it.

Layers of Interoperability

"To have an effective terrorism response plan, we have to integrate our local communities and encourage mutual aid pacts…interoperability is the key."

- Tom Ridge, Former Director of Homeland Security

M/A-COM has stepped up to the plate with a pure network-level interoperability solution for Emergency Responders that will cost-effectively interconnect disparate systems without replacing existing infrastructure or radios and is scalable - from one agency to a nation.
