Federal Agencies

As a result of a Congressional/ NTIA (National Telecommunications and Information Administration) Narrowband mandate, Federal agencies are rapidly developing plans and obtaining funding for a forced transition to narrowband channels. Failure to comply may result in some severe consequences.

By mandate, UHF wideband users (406.1 - 420 MHz) have until January 2008 to make the transition. Federal agencies directly affected by this sweeping mandate range from the DoD for non-tactical radios to the Departments of Justice, Treasury and Homeland Security law enforcement bureaus as well as Railroads and Federal Utilities.

In addition to migrating legacy systems to narrowband, every new system in the Federal frequencies must be narrowband. This includes DoD non-tactical LMR which also operates in the 380-399.9 MHz military band.
